Would you buy a high mile (60k) 950 adv? (Bought+Build thread)

I'm on the prowl for a 950 and one has come my way. I'd like to get some input though.

2005.5 KTM 950 Adventure
62,000 miles
Original Owner - mechanic
Owner maintained with all the common problems taken care of

Extras include: ($5000 in extras)
Slavens suspension
Woody's Wheels
Akro's
Other miscellaneous parts
All stock parts including hard bags

I've searched the internet far and wide. I do know the basics of the 950 and what to look for. But the high mileage kind of worries me with the price he's asking and my available funds with backup funds for issues. And yes I've looked at all the high mileage threads and I'm not too concerned about 62k.

What do you think? Anything I should question? Look at?

I personally feel there are a few things worth checking for on a high mileage bike or car, Compression to tell me how the motor is doing, the hot idle after a ride/drive to check for leaks and the how does it shift. Bike only would be inspect for frame damage, Anything else I feel solid I can service, basically if the motor/trans is good everything else is a wear part and should be looked at accordingly.

Big costs can come from anywhere but the motor or trans would be top on my list of "do not want to replace".

(saying this while finishing up a head/base gasket replace on my 950)

With those bullet points, if the price is right I think you should stop over thinking it and buy it. If you want guarantees, buy new.

Looked after.....price....mileage wouldn't bother me. I'd rather buy a bike from a good home....opposed to Dealer FSH.

We ALL need to stop thinking 60,000 miles on a 10 year old bike is high mileage, IT'S NOT, it's only 6,000 miles a year FFS.

As long as its maintained properly it should easily see double that IMO.

The Van I use for work is 3 years old with 70,000 miles on it, I consider it barely run in, why should a bike be different?

It's all about condition. I've seen 20k mile bikes I wouldn't touch and 60k models that look like new.

Are all the updates done? If so, buy with confidence. I had mine for sale but changed my mind because it runs so well and I can't come close to replacing it for the money I'd get for it. 52k miles

price is right why not buy it.

worst case you can break it and get money back if not profit on al the extras

My 05 Adventure has 70K miles on it now and it runs better than when it was new.
Things to check:
- Coolant lines. Especially the little one between the cylinders
- Water Pump shaft
- Fuel pump. Just buy a spare and keep it under the seat
- Clutch Slave

Other than that, if it runs good, has compression, and you like it, buy it.
It IS a used bike, but hopefully the previous owner has sorted out all the little glitches by now. Little things will come up, but the bike will never let you down.

Heck. If you buy a new 1190, you will still be taking it to the dealer for small stuff.

Seriously. These bikes are probably some of the best machines ever made by man. And the new bikes are not better.

This is good to hear. He says that he put in a 990 water pump, evoluzion slave, but hasn't mentioned the fuel pump so I'll ask about that. Also all the TSB's have been taken care of.
I'm driving a ways tomorrow to check it out, and most likely purchase it. I've been doing as much research as possible these past couple days and I'm not as worried about 60k on a 950. I just wish I was the guy who bought the bike new and put 60k on it as I'm sure there are a lot of good stories. Hopefully I can get the bike to 100k!

Well I ended up buying it. A few little issues that I'll need to go over. I'll update this thread once I get into the bike to see how everything looks.

Congratulations

I bought a high mileage 950 S earlier this year as well. And while I had the option to buy a much lower mileage bike instead I decided to save the money and use it to upgrade or replace the things that needed to be fixed. There have been a few issues with the bike but I am working my way through them and will get them all sorted out this year so that I have a lot more confidence in the bike next year.


Make a list of items that you want to check and tick a few of them off each time you have a chance to do them.

A high mileage well maintained vehicle is much better than a low mileage vehicle that gas just sat and been ignored

Well I took it out for a test ride. 20 miles of canyon roads, 15 miles of dirt roads, and some atv/hardcore jeep trails. The brakes are messed up. The front brake has extreme vibration issues - either from a bent rotor or bad pads. The rear brake feels like mashed potatoes. There is also a power delivery issue above 6k. I'm guess the carbs need to be cleaned. Other than that the bike was great and I had a blast! I enjoyed it a lot better than my 690 which I've brought on the same ride. I'll post pics tomorrow once I tear apart the bike.
