Wow, for once Marquez is not at the front right from the start of free practices... wonder how long that will last, probably until FP3.

The kerbs at this track do not allow him to ride his usual style, but also Lorenzo and Rossi are stepping up. Better brakes and improved downshifting make the Yamaha more competitive with the Honda.

The tire advantage of the non-factory option bikes is bumping them up the order as usual, but how this plays out in the rain is anybody's guess.

I suspect in the rain, Marquez usual style will not be a factor. Or rather his need to use that style will be gone.
Normal service will resume.
If wet:
1. Marquez not dragging things, but going faster than anybody else have the balls to attempt. After Bradl, Smith and Pol bin it into the kitty litter pretending to alien status.
2. Rossi, nearly king in the wet too.
3. Pedrosa fights with Dovi for the whole race. The rain allowing the mellowed Ducati to keep up with the slow to heal Pedrosa.
Nicky has a soft get off that launches his doorstop of a bike into and across the gravel, where it skips and jumps the barriers, coming to rest in a dumpster, (That would be the "tip" for those on the far side of the pond). He escapes unhurt, but the master of all that is Honda is embarrassed beyond all mortal understanding, rushes frmo the factory garages in tears, wetting his nappies in the process. Fox News posts the smartphone photo of the bike in the bin. Commenting on the event in extreme error as a NASCAR race in South Carolina.
By Monday Fox News are claiming their feed was hacked, and are investigating a middle school in Liberal Kansas, an oxymoron if there ever was one...
Nicky is given his choice of factory bikes from Honda.

NASCAR official deny any connection to actual racing. Then partially catching their mistake claim the image came from a stolen gixxer one million in the Hamptons.
None of the above could be verified at this time. Operators are standing by.

Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team #35) - 15th (1'43.725)
"Obviously today I'm not very happy with the situation, we've made hardly any improvement and my Desmosedici GP14 had very little grip. We need to improve tomorrow, but for the moment it's difficult because we still have the same problem in that we cannot turn the bike the way we want to..."
Cal says this every round, like he never got the memo.

As he did last year, he is showing up with the "Graffiti" helmet and new race numbers graphic designed by Anna Vives in support of her association for the workers with Down syndrome.

Crutchlow best of the also-rans but misses out on Q2. He's a tenth and a half quicker than Redding on the proddy Honda.

Bautista and Iannone through to the final 12.

Which will contribute to the likelihood of a fall. Something has to happen to slow this kid.

Well, sometimes wishing works.

Marquez crashes in qualifying, losing the front into turn 1 as he tries to catch Pedrosa and Lorenzo. He's okay.

Bradl fourth despite running off on his final quick-lap chance. Rossi made a last-ditch leap from 10th up to 5th.

Then it's Aleix Espargaro and then Dovi.

Three and a half tenths between Dani on pole and Dovi in seventh. Looks like we might get another good race.

Oh, and Yoni Hernandez will start on the end of the third row in 9th, having out-qualified Pol Espargaro, Iannone, Bautista (crash) and Crutchlow. On (IIRC) last year's Ducati.

You could since a sigh of relief amongst the competitors knowing MM lost his Alien status for at least one corner this season.

Glad he walked away.......
