York, PA to Deadhorse, AK 2014

Yes, I know another Alaska ride report. Over the past few years I think I have read about every Alaska ride report and I have enjoyed and learned something from everyone. So I hope this does the same for others.

We have planned this and talked about it and talked about it for years and now it really happened.

Three of us from York county Pa. I ride a 2006 VStrom 1000, Maxbet rides a 2005 Kawasaki Concours, Greg ride a 2012 VStrom 1000. I have been to Alaska 15 years ago with my wife. We flew to Anchorage and rented an RV and drove around. Maxbet has done a similar RV trip in 2007 and he rode his Concours to the Arctic Circle in 2012 with two other York inmates. Greg has never been to Alaska.

Our primary focus was to ride to Alaska and ride the Dalton Highway. After that we would see what else we had time to do.

So lets get started.

Twist and Turns

We all know how a trip like this has it's unexpected twist and turns. I didn't take long for that to happen.

We weren't more than 50 miles from home, on the PA Turnpike when we came upon another loaded bike heading West. When I saw the gas can I thought he must be headed somewhere remote. We waved and he fell in behind us and stopped when we did for our first gas. As he walked over I ask him where he was headed and he said the same place you are. What a coincidence! He is from Gettysburg which is about 30 or 40 miles from York. That we would be leaving at the same time on the same day going the same place He ask if he could follow us for the day.

So I am thinking Oh great, some guy that probably talks too much and will tell us about the times he has climbed Mt. Everest and run with bulls in Pamplona and had lunch with the Pope and walked across Mongolia and was on the Honda Factory Moto GP team. When it comes time to pay his share he won't have any cash and his credit card won't work and just needs to borrow a couple bucks, you know the guy.

Well, Steve is not that guy. It was nice to meet him. He is still on his ride and here is his ride report website. 2wheelfun.com He shared a cabin with us that first night went his own way the next morning.

This is Steve.

This would not be the last we see of him.

Moving West

The first few days we just wanted to make good time and get as far West as we could. So mostly highway riding, our first day ended in Michigan City IN and our second day in Sioux Falls SD and our third in Billings MT.
We stayed in cabins at campgrounds, I like these, it beats setting up a tent, especially in the rain and when you split the cost 3 or 4 ways it's not expensive.

Michigan City-

Sioux Falls-

Billings-

Lesson learned

The fourth day of our trip took us from Billing MT up the West side of Glacier Park and into Canada. We all had extra gas cans with us for the time in Canada and Alaska. None of us had put gas in them yet, waiting until just before crossing the border. I will never make that mistake again! We gassed up in Billing and at around 190 miles we pulled into a gas station that was closed so we moved on. About 30 miles later Greg disappeared off the back so Maxbet and I turned around to find him. There he was at the side of the road out of gas. This is where it is better to be lucky than good. There was a side road to some small town and it said "gas". It was 1 1/2 miles DOWN HILL, he coasted the whole way right into the one pump gas station. Greg said he wanted to buy some lottery tickets since it was his lucky day. Oh yeah, we all put gas in our spare cans at that point.

This looks like your average one pump gas station, but to Greg it was the best thing he saw all day.

Leaving the Country

We left Montana and entered British Columbia at Roosville. We had hoped to visit Glacier Park and ride The Going to the Sun Road, but they didn't have the snow cleared from the road yet. We will try again on the way home. This is where the trip got more interesting for me. I was looking forward to Kootenay Park and Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway. I was not disappointed, I enjoyed all of them.

Kootenay Park

Anybody know what kind of dog this is? We saw them hanging out by the side of the road. Kind of looked like a Newfoundland to me. Someone said they like to have their belly rubbed, but I could't get close enough. See her two kids behind her? One brown, one black.

Lake Louise

Icefields Parkway

And I think these are whitetail deer, but a little different than back East

I didn't expect to see albino Muskox, weren't we lucky!

And some wild horses.

Another unexpected twist

Day 5 has us end the day in Grande Prairie. After we ate at Boston Pizza I checked on Steve's website to see how his trip was going only to see his Spot Track showed him in Grande Prairie also. Greg called him and plans where made to meet in the morning and he would join us again. We would ride together the next four days.

Dawson Creek was another highlight for me just because it is the start of the Alaska Highway and I have seen so many photos of riders and bikes at the sign. It almost didn't seem real to ride up to the intersection and see the sign.

Another couple of Newfoundland's along the Alaska Highway, notice the bugs flying around them.

lucky----unlucky

Remember how lucky Greg was the other day with the gas station? Well, his luck ran out today. He was using his camera and his phone to take photos. After taking a few shots and getting back on the road he thought he felt something hit his leg but didn't really think much about it right away. Then he thought that could have been his phone, so he stopped to check and yes his phone was gone. He was last in line and turned around to look for it, when we saw he was missing we all went back and helped him look but we never found it. He was able to get a replacement when we got to Fairbanks.

Wow, your wildlife identification skills are amazing!

Isn't the real mile 0 post still in downtown Dawson Creek?
