Coldfoot

Next stop would be Coldfoot. The Post Office doesn't seem to have the same hours as those around home.

We tried to squeeze as much gas in the bikes as possible because we knew the next gas was 240 miles away.

We saw this RV and car pulling out of the Coldfoot lot, the back of the RV and the car were just covered with calcium cloride mud!!!!

Then we rode the 18 miles to Wiseman and found our room for the night. Greg really enjoyed the mosquito population, we all did!

The Return of Hildalgo....

Hi Dave !
As I type this, the driver of the bike transport company is headed to Wiley, CO to pick her up ! By the end of the day, she should be safely loaded & secured inside the Daily Delivery trailer, and then sometime in the next 3-6 weeks, she will be snuggled into my garage ! LoL.. Good work so far on the RR, and btw, I sent you an email on an unrelated topic !

Steve.

So you had bad wind coming and going!! We were so lucky with the winds. We were not on 90 going home, took a more southern route. I swear we had a tail wind the whole way across Iowa.

Finally---Deadhorse/Prudoe Bay!

June 17th Day 11

After fighting the mosquitos last evening I never thought they would be active this morning at 43 degrees, I was wrong. Everything up here is tougher.

Today is the day, Leaving Wiseman we knew this was the day we had been looking forward to. We had hoped for nice weather to ride this and we got our wish.

The road condition was pretty good until we got to the construction zone

This was one of our flaggers, I don't know how he does this. They are working 13 hour days. Notice how flat it has gotten.

This is his protection from the wind, apparently cost was no object.

Following the Pilot Truck

There is some sloppy road

Eat my dust boys.

We are getting close.

Gonna make it.

I was scheduled to do this trip two years ago with Maxbet, CDCSlim and C14xTom. Two months before departure my wife was diagnosed with cancer, had surgery and started chemo. I dropped out of the trip to stay home and at that point I thought my chance to do this ride was over. Maxbet made the offer to go back to Alaska if I would wait until 2014 so I took him up on that offer. I was getting the feeling of being so close to accomplishing a goal that had been in my thoughts for so long when----------------my bike died, I tried more throttle-nothing. 218 miles and I was out of gas. That's some poor mileage. That's OK we were prepared, I used my spare gas and away we went. Ooopps, until Greg ran out 9 miles later, more spare gas and go. We had noticed the temperature drop as we got closer to the Bay.

There it is in the distance----Deadhorse AK

We did it

We rode our bikes from home to Deadhorse --------------------------------even if my bike breaks down now I have done.

Now to find a room. We found the Prudoe Bay Hotel.

And checked with the girls at the front desk, they had vacancies

They gave us prime parking spots.

This is my side of the room. I was expecting a towel animal on my bed but never got one.

We settled in and spent the afternoon in the cafeteria using wifi

Mud

If you plan to ride to Deadhorse expect your bike to get a little dirty.

Day 12 June 18

Wyngs and WildMonkey rolled into Deadhorse at 1:30 am after taking 18 hours from Fairbanks to Deadhorse. And they got up, had breakfast and headed back down the road to Fairbanks. WOW

We got our breakfast at the cafeteria and packed our brown bag lunch for the road and headed out. It was 34 this morning, coldest of the trip. It was foggy and light rain most of the morning. If you are ever in downtown Deadhorse and looking for the gas station this is what it looks like.

On our way out of town we saw these giraffe by the road.

A few road shots heading South

We stopped for a roadside picnic.

Getting close to Wiseman.

We spent the night in Wiseman again and tomorrow we will complete the Dalton Highway.

Is this going to be a new "Ride to Eat" location? Also someone forgot to take their booties off before they walked outside.
