I hope my comments didn't seem critical. I respect anyone who manages their money and lives within their means. I think Danny was being informative for anyone who is thinking about doing a trip to this area. He is correct about the cost to visit Alaska and Cananda. I had the advantage of advice from my friends who did this trip 2 years ago. I set aside enough money was prepared to spend all of it.

Finishing the Dalton Highway

We continued south and got to the end of the Dalton. A feeling of satisfaction to be done. I can now put this sticker on my bike, I like the message.

But we have much more to see and do on this ride.

We continue back to Fairbanks and head to a car wash, $16 later most of the mud is gone. It is early afternoon so south on The Parks Highway towards Denali we go. Got a room in Healey. During supper I see Maxbet stop eating mid-meal. I knew something was wrong by the look on his face. He has had kidney stones in the past and he knew from the location of the pain that's what it was. He had a miserable night, lots of pain and very little sleep.

Day 14 ---- June 20

Maxbet was feeling a little better in the morning. We were going to take the day off for him to recover but the motel was booked for the night so we had to leave. We waited until about noon and headed for the Denali Highway.

We knew that Steve was in the area from his "Spot". As we rode south of Denali we saw his bike at the Hostel. We stopped to check on it and it's a good thing we did. Someone had messed with his bike so we took photos for the police investigation. Steve. I hope they catch them!

After our good deed for the day we moved on toward our next road. I have read and been told how scenic the Denali Highway is and it was all true. We had a great weather day and it really made for a nice ride.

Finally !!! Finally we saw a bear, I was begining to think we would never see one. We were able to sneak up close too.

To keep the day short for Maxbet we stopped in Glennallen, he was doing OK but we knew he was tired.

Next Day ----# 15

Day 15?, that means we are at the half way point of our alloted 30 day trip, how did that happen.

It rained hard overnight but was not raining as we loaded up. Well that didn't last long. Light rain turned into steady rain as we got to Tok, rainsuits on. Around noon it cleared up and got nice.

Here was another highlight of the trip. I can say this with much certainty, most people that visit Alaska/Canada don't get to see a Giant Panda, but look at this!!!

A little later we ran into Wyngs again, he and WildMonkey had gone their separate ways. He waved at us to pull over and explained that his bike was not running right, and ask if we would follow him in case it stopped on him. We followed him until we came to a gas station and he was able to put some premium in and just a short distance down the road it started running better, must have been bad gas. I have that sometimes too.

And another Panda !! wow. Hey Greg that's close enough

Great scenery around the Destruction Bay area.

Ended the day in Haines Junction. There were bicycles everywhere and we found out there was a race from Haines Junction to Haines AK, 157 miles. The solo winner did it in 7 1/2 hours. They had the road closed all day so I'm glad we didn't plan to ride to Haines today.

View from our hotel

Maxbet was looking over his bike and saw that his brake pads were really worn. That Dalton mud had taken its toll. All of his pads were worn but one front pad was toast, apparently mud had caused a caliper piston to not release and completely wear out the pad. Now to find replacement pads.

And, we made our Ferry reservations for the next day in Haines.

I really appreciate you all following me through there, was more than a little worried. I wanted to ride the Denali as well but the timing wasnt right and I was just too tired from that 1 day up the Dalton. Rode to Tok and slept in the ambulance instead

Enjoying your report very much. Thank you for taking the time to post it. I do tip my hat to those that can ride street tires in mud and gravel. Also, agree that there is no price tag on fulfilling a dream. Looking forward to the rest of your story.
