I rode to lunch with a coworker in his jacked up jeep. We were waved at by other Jeep drivers on the way there and the way back.

My daughter came home from the store the other day, after having gone there in my 98 Wrangler...

She walks in the door and says "How come when I'm in the Jeep, other people in Jeeps wave at me?"

"Cuz dear......it's a Jeep thing...."

I usually initiate the wave so that I get it over with and I don't need to watch the other rider to see if he waves so I can return it.

OTH, this year it seems that no one waves, I guess I missed the memo.

As for other vehicles, back when VW's were air cooled the wave to others of it's kind were pretty much mandatory.
Same with MG's and other Brit. two-seaters.

In Texas, I estimate (very unscientifically) that the percentage waving is higher than 90% (excluding freeway, other roadways with divided carriageways). I figure there's a percentage that are too concerned about taking a hand off, don't see you or whatever. And maybe there is 5% or less who could but choose not to.

I notice no prevalence between HD, squid, tourers, ADV or others. Even moto-cops will often wave if you wave at them first. I really don't care either way because there have been times when I have been preoccupied and not waved so I tend to give everybody the benefit of the doubt.

I gotta bring it back to this question, sorry.
Out of the couple books I've read, a few tv documentaries on HA, SOS, etc. and, I'll admit it, watching SOA, I've never heard of it. That doesn't mean much.
I'm sure there are some inmates - 60pan for example, that might be able to verify the history of the 'hand on knee' wave.

Might be a local epidemic.

On multiple occasions in the same town, I'd wave and they'd nod their head like "nope". I wave to every single person. If they don't wave, I don't care. If they snub me somehow, well I figure they aren't riding because they share the passion, and just using the bike as transportation.

Who says they don't "share the passion" for riding? They just don't wave and isn't worth reading anything into it. You must care at least a little otherwise you wouldn't say they snubbed you and make false assumptions about them. Either way, just ride!

Looking me in the eyes and nodding "no" seems like going out of your way. No, I really don't care, but I can still identify a dickhead when I see one.

More like "just using the bike because they think it makes them a badass".

The nod is for when your left hand is occupied with the clutch, either at a stop or when changing gears in my world anyway.

I assume they are not nodding in an affirmative way, but rather shaking the head 'no.'

Some of you care waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much about if folks wave back or not. It suggests that you've got some pretty serious issues with your ego if you get so butt-hurt (despite your denials) when your existence isn't acknowledged.

I wave if I can. If they wave back great, if they don't, great. I don't make judgments about why they're using the bike, or whether or not they're refusing to wave because I'm not riding "x" bike, I'm just happy to see another biker on the road.
