Ruta 40 Argentina: Scouting Trip #2

Back in 2006 I had the opportunity to visit Argentina for the first time and found myself in Bariloche, one of the most beautiful places on earth. It was at this same time that a seed was planted due to the fact that Patagonia was ripe with two of my favorite vehicles, Range Rover Defenders and BMW GS bikes. I imagined myself cruising from Dallas to Tierra del Fuego, gorging myself on empanadas along the way. Two years later I buy a 800GS and farkle it out for the trip, however things start to unravel when both of my riding buddies sell their bikes and violence in Mexico and central America hit an all time high. I give up for the time being and end up selling my F800 and getting on with life.

Fast forward to this summer. I return to Argentina for the third time, this time visiting the northwestern part of the country in and around Salta. Immediately, the dream comes alive again and my trip begins to take on a new route. Simply, Ruta 40 from Bolivia to Bariloche. The thing that sealed the deal was coming across a large group of riders (like 50) from Paraguay on Ruta 52 at a mountain pass some 4,170 m high. They were all riding BMW's.!

Within one week of my return to the USA I pick up a 1200GS and the dream is alive again.

What I have to share is a little photographic example of what I will see again in the summer of 2016 and what you'd likely experience on Ruta 40. The pictures you see here are what I found along the way between Salta, Jujuy, Cachi, Molinos, Pumamarca, etc. This little portion of Ruta 40 and Ruta 52 would be remarkable enough to justify a trip, but Salta to Bariloche is my plan.
