The Jimmy Lewis Class - October 1-2, 2005

Motorcyclists are a varied bunch for sure, but there’s at least two things we all share that come to mind – a desire to ride better, and have more fun doing it. As a relatively new rider, I hear a lot of “tips & tricks” from all over – do this, do that, elbows up, weight outside peg, etc… Since picking up my first bike, most of my riding has been alone. It can get expensive (and sometimes painful) just riding a lot and learning technique by “figuring out what works”.

I’d been wanting to do one of these courses for a long while to prevent developing any bad habits early on – it’s great to listen to advice from buddies, but how many of your buddies have finished 4th in Dakar … as a privateer!? Regardless of your level of experience, there’s more to learn.

Feel pretty comfortable barrel racing around cones? Wait until Jimmy power slides underneath you when you’re mid-way through a turn, all the while explaining how to improve your technique … but I’ll get to that later.

First I have to get to the class…

The ride out.

I had a hard time figuring out when my ride to Primm really started. Thursday night I had a photo shoot in LA, turned out to be kind of eventful – the road was closed because of this:

Fortunately, I had loaded the camera gear onto the 950 for the ride up to LA – made quick work of passing the endless line of cars waiting to return once a detour was arranged to the location.

This shoot ended late ... got home and went to bed at 2:30 am – having set the alarm for 4am.

It was a nice nap though.

Up the next morning I got on the 950 & went straight back to LA to meet Berti (of advrider PCQ fame) for the ride out to Primm. Berti had a dirt/pavement route planned to get out there once we escaped the concrete jungle of greater Los Angeles. We’re on the road to Lucern Valley when Berti notices a fun, whooped out-trail parallel to the highway:

This trail took us straight to the breakfast stop near the hwy 18 cutoff. From there it was on to Camp Rock Road – a fast, scenic detour that provides a welcome escape from the drone of the 15.

If you ever get out this way, there’s a cutoff for Granite Road, right at the turn for Camp Rock Road. Follow this out for about 3-4 miles & you’ll come to Cougar Buttes – a Mecca of sorts for trials riders.

Berti & I looked around some of the obstacles out there:

I had an event out here a couple weeks ago, and these things are a whole lot easier to get up on a trials bike:

Back to the road…

This road eventually hooked us up with hwy 40 & we jumped on pavement to burn over to Dumont dunes to play around

Guess who we ran into…

Next up… The students and Dakar Guys in the dunes

Awesome !!!

If I only had the $$$ and approval from SWMBO - when is the baby due?

Must live vicariously... Your trip is enviable.

Love those "roads" that parallel most desert highways. Ripped along a few on 395, 40 and others to Havasu last summer. Woo hoo! High speed fun with some random obstacles thrown in .

can't wait to see more pics from this event.

Hey Inte! Good meeting you at the class. (Inte, for all his modesty, was probably the best student in the class not counting Berti. Why not counting Berti? Cuz he's taken the class umpteen times and was more like a third instructor. )

Ah yes. Now that I see it with the hack, I think I remember seeing something about it before. Cool rig . . . some people will try anything.
