If you don't like going fast around corners, go slow. Ride your own ride. The whole point of riding is to have fun. IMO fear isn't fun.

Lots of good advice. Primary -- look where you want to go, down the road, not over the cliff. When I find myself uncomfortable I think of that.

Exactly so. Beginning skiiers lean backwards and hence don't get the bite of the edges that one needs to execute a turn under control. Also, beginning skiers are scared that they're going to get going too fast and won't be able to stop. Same with a bike. You need to get your weight over the front of the bike, and you need to practice stopping going downhill. Once you are confident in your ability to slow the bike going down hill, you'll stop worrying about gaining speed and things will fall into place.

When I was living in Utah I had an acquaintance with whom I both skied and rode. He was a crappy skier and a crappy downhill rider, and it never occurred to him that the reasons for both were the same. Weirdly, he was a great downhill mountain bike rider....

Never had an issue with leaning back. I lean forward and into the turn whether it's down flat or up.

I'm willing to bet that beginners like me lean forward going uphill and backwards going downhill. That would explain the difference in confidence levels on hills. Thanks.

Thanks for all the advice!! Don't worry about hurting my feelings, I can take it.

None of my bikes have been much under 500lbs until this DRZ. My first bike was a Honda GL500, second was the DL650, third a 1200GS. I freaking LOVE the supermoto (except on highways, but hoping to re-gear the transmission with the wider ratio gears eventually), and lately my GS has been sitting around way too much. I like the neutral/dual-sport seating posture which is why I never looked at something like the 250 Ninja (too forward, road one in the MSF course and really didn't like it), and always figured dirt bikes weren't made for street.

Silly me.

I can't find any Advanced Riding Courses nearby but I'm only an hour from Bakersfield so may look into a track day or see what they offer. You're all right, I never learned proper technique on a light bike and I think it's stifling me a bit.

As for learning on dirt, that would be awesome except - excuse time! - I have bad knees that making standing up from the seated position painful. I'm working on it but, from what I've seen, for now I'm sticking to roads or light forest trails. Really disappointing because ADV reeeeeeeally gets one fired up for dirt, but...yeah.

Not too surprised by the poll results so far, lol I figured it was just me. ;) I think, once falls gets here and it's not 100* degrees, I'm going to look into a track day. Meanwhile, love the advice, keep it coming!!

Huh!! Hadn't even thought about this, that's a good point! I definitely lean forward uphill, but not downhill.

Gonna have to keep an eye on that too!

Going downhill will put additional weight on your hands, you might be finding it harder to control the bike while having to exert extra strength just to hold yourself up.

The poll doesn't match the rest of the thread. I like twisties (so I voted that way), but not downhill.

For me, it is a matter of riding within limits. To push at all in a corner downhill puts me close to my margin of safety. Uphill, I can push really hard knowing that gravity will be my friend in the event of an emergency.

About the supermoto comments: my favorite bike in downhill twisties would be a lightweight supermoto, since gravity helps carry a rear wheel slide further into a corner.

Love twisties. A series of very steep downhill twistes are not my favorite though. I always feel like I have to be more focused in order to not overload the front.

The best passing opportunities come on downhill off camber hairpins. They scare the shit out of most riders. Fuck the brakes turn up the loud switch and turn the fucking thing. Run up on the inside making a shitload of noise and roll on by.

Should have been a choice for "as much fun as any other type of cornering" It is for me.

Down hill corners aren't any different to me.

Like down hill straights in dirt - just a fast straightaway, NAIL IT.

Actually they're easier because you get power from gravity, less throttle needed.
