The Lions Road will be blocked off for all but motorcyclists for nearly 42km of its brilliant twists and turns, and there will be a big festival in Kyogle, too
Think the Sturgis Rally meets the famed Isle of Man TT – that’s the vision behind the recently announced Lions TT Motorcycle Festival, with plans to hold the maiden event from October 4-6, 2014.
As part of the festival, the glorious Lions Road, which spans parts of both NSW and Qld, will be turned into a closed road circuit for motorcyclists. The proposed route will span 41.8km, starting just outside of Rathdowney (Qld) -- 100km south-west of Brisbane -- and finishing at Ripples on the Creek (NSW).
As well as the closed circuit component, there are plans afoot to stage a motorcycle festival and a sprint event on a 200-metre circuit, both based at Kyogle, 25km south of Ripples on the Creek. Kyogle is the main reason the Lions Road exists, as most of the funding and labour to complete the sinuous piece of bitumen was backed by the local Lions Club – hence the naming convention. The road was completed in 1971.
"The concept is to give the motorcycle enthusiast the opportunity to ride within the signed limits and to not have to worry about any oncoming traffic," said the CEO of the Lions TT, Mark Luxford. "This has many enthusiasts very excited. It is all about making a dream happen of bringing the Isle of Man and the Sturgis formats to Australia.
“The Lions TT, motorcycle festival and motorcycle sprint event is aiming to embed a history and tradition targeting a wide motorcycle demographic."
The Lions TT Group is a non-for profit organisation, and all profits earned will be going back into the upkeep of the Lions Road.
On July 6, 2014, a ‘Lions TT Founders Ride’ will be held, with clusters leaving from Brisbane (location TBA), Sunshine Coast (Northcoast MotorSports in Caloundra) and the Gold Coast (location TBA) and meeting at Rathdowney by 10:30am. The enlarged group will then ride the Lions Road to Kyogle for a barbecue lunch, followed by a forum to discuss the strategy moving forward as well as presentations. Founding membership costs $150, complete with a number of short- and long-term benefits.

What is the Lions TT?
The Lions TT Motorcycle Festival, including café racer sprint, is aiming to embed a history and tradition for all varieties of motorcycles, riders and enthusiasts. What is the ethos of the event?
The Lions Rd runs between Rathdowney and on the way to Kyogle and is without doubt a national treasure. Accordingly, by using this amazing road for this weekend, we are raising money to enable further improvements to the road's condition and safety. We are very pleased to be supported by both the Kyogle Regional Council and Scenic Rim Regional Council through the pioneering of the inaugural Lions TT
It is a meeting point for all motorcycle enthusiasts, designers, engineers, developers and their motorcycles, for international personalities, racers and trendsetters of the scene.
A carnival of motorcycle life!?
In the heart of Kyogle, vendor placements, a dealer paddock and street carnival atmosphere will run over 3 days. Kyogle will be offering it’s warm country town hospitality to all who come. It will consist of participants, customizers and clubs from all over Australia, along with key motorcycle industry celebrities.
Sponsor, vendor, dealer and rider participation will play a great role in making the Lions TT successful.
Where is the road?
The Lions TT, Kyogle and Scenic Rim Councils are offering access to the famous Lions road where 40km of the road is blocked off to all except participating motorcyclists, which essentially means no on-coming traffic to worry about in those tight corners.
Running along side the Lions TT event will be our 1/8-mile motorcycle sprint in Kyogle during the day. With show acts and live music it will be entertaining with well-known bands during the evening.
