Ever since BMW announced the new 900 GS lineup back in September, we’ve heard… basically nothing. There was no international journalists’ launch, and really, very little follow-up in general. We never even had confirmation the bike was coming to the US anytime soon—but now the guys at Motorcycle.com have found some convincing evidence that it’s arriving this year.

Dennis Chung of MO tells us:

… BMW has submitted vehicle identification number information for the three models to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the 2024 model year. The three GS models were included on the filing submitted this morning, along with the rest of BMW’s 2024 lineup.

We figured it was only a matter of time before the F 800 and F 900 GS models were announced for the U.S. market, though we assumed they would have been confirmed closer to the launch of the flagship R 1300 GS. With the VIN decoder filings, we expect confirmation to come very soon.

Good news, if you didn’t fancy the new R1300 model, and wanted a parallel twin instead of a flat twin! Of course, there has been no official confirmation from BMW yet, nor do we have an MSRP or anything like that.

What we’re getting

The new 900 is the next step up from BMW’s F850 series, which was itself the descendant of the F800 series that began about 15 years ago. You can read our full write-up on the new bike here, but basically, the machine gets not just a motor makeover, but a full-on redesign of many smaller pieces to go with the big-ticket items.

A lot of riders have preferred the 800-class BMWs for their perceived ease-of-use off-road when compared to the bigger R-series GS models. Now that the R1300 GS is lighter, there’s only about 40 lb difference between the base-model F900 GS and the big-bore model. It will be interesting to see if that results in more riders reconsidering the choice of a large bike, or if the updates to the smaller model will maintain its favored status with dirty-minded riders.
