I recently purchased a 2007 r6 with 13000 miles. It ran perfect for 2500 of those miles after I bought it but recently developed a weird issue where it would bog down after roughly an hour of driving. The first time it happened I was on the highway and I would randomly feel myself get pushed forward as if I let off throttle for a split second, but I assumed it was just the wind as it was horrible that day. But soon after that if I applied any more than quarter throttle the bike would lose engine power and the rpms would slowly drop, eventually it would die at a light. I pushed the bike to the sidewalk let it cool down while off and the issue didn't occur again. That was a week ago, the same issue happened again a few days ago but this time only seemed to occur in 6th gear at full throttle( The first time it happened in every gear). So I took it to a reputable shop near me and they mentioned how it could be the spark plugs or ignition coil/pack(im not mechanically inclined so I have no clue) when I explained my issue. Once they had the bike they idled it on and off for roughly an hour and 30 minutes with the bike not having any issue. They wanted 3 hours of labor (almost 400 dollars) to diagnose the issue, and as I am college student I try to do as much as I can myself so I opted to hit the forums lol. This seems to happen somewhat intermittently as it didn't happen on the way back(1 hour and 15 minute drive) from the first time it happened. I'm going to do spark plugs this weekend as that seems like the cheaper thing to do for now but it seems weird to me that the spark plugs could work fine for an hour and then start to die. The bike is completely stock outside of a yoshimura slip on, Any advice or help?
Wow, a nOOb!! Probably some R6 forums out there that may be better to ask this question. The garage is a better place to ask this question. But... Could be many things. TB sync, leaking vacuum lines, bad cylinder compression, fuel pump and filter...
Yeah, keep at it! A mod may move it, but keep it up dude! You can leave it here... Check the color of the spark plugs, should all be light tan-ish... May be a better place... 2007 r6 violently bogging please help | Yamaha R6 Forum: YZF-R6 Forums Looks like you are there already!
Other than the slip-on, are you sure it has no other mods? Have you had the tank off recently for anything? What you are describing sounds like it's being starved. I asked about the tank, because a blocked or pinched tank vent will do that. It runs well for a while, and then you get too much vacuum in the tank for the pump to overcome. When it bogs down again, stop and open the fuel cap, let air in the tank. See if that causes the bogging to go away. Or, you could check the vent line at home and verify it's open and air flows freely through it. Related could be a fuel pump that's has a blocked filter or is dying. Have you run the bike on hot days with an almost empty tank? That's a good way to kill a fuel pump. If it's not the vent, take a look at the fuel filter and fuel pump. Do you have a shop manual for it? Before you start taking stuff off, get one. Yamaha manuals are really good and detailed, it'll help you learn a lot about bike maintenance and save you and your bank account from those expensive trips to the local stealer. Gustavo
OK ill try that next time it happens replaced old spark plugs and tested coil packs, which came back fine, so if it happens again ill try that.
