Hi all, I recently noticed my left multi function controls are starting to fritz out on me after a heavy winter rain in California. I thought these things were waterproof! The controls that stopped working include: Horn turn signal kill cruise control on/off cruise control set/resume Rather than paying an absorbent amount to a BMW dealer or buying the OEM new, I decided I'd disassemble to see if I could fix it. So far so good. I've managed to get the horn working again, and I removed the turn signal kill button, cleaned it and it's working again. The only problem I'm running into now is trying to figure out the epoxy or resin used to weatherproof the buttons to the circuit board. Does anyone know where I can buy this stuff to reseal the buttons to the circuit board? Here's an image of the unit. Notice the button with the arrow. I had to remove this to remove water damage and clean the contacts. Notice the resin around it that needs to be resealed.
I'd use conformal coating http://www.mgchemicals.com/products/conformal-coatings/silicone-conformal-coating-422b
Standard Loctite epoxy should do the trick, use their marine epoxy if you're concerned the regular stuff won't be waterproof enough.
There's an ongoing TSB for the switch controls, and your 13GSW is included in it. Basically, if they start to fail, you bring it into the dealer and tell them the stuff simply stopped working, and make sure to mention the cruise control doesn't work either. I'd be cautious of using anything which, when cures, hardens; with that said, I know conformal coating will work fine, I have no experience with the loctite stuff.
I agree. If you switches haven't been replaced good chance you get new left and right switches for free. Call the dealer and ask.
Picking up a friends S1000RR today for recall on the right side switches that had left him stranded a couple times. TSB covered replacement. After seeing the above picture of the circuit board I see what they saw not to use the Kill Switch except for emergency.
Thanks all. It is covered under warranty for replacement. Made an appointment with dealer to get it fixed. Too bad, I was having fun trying to repair myself.
My 2013 GSW switches are playing up. I’ve enquired whether it was under recall in Australia and they said there’s no active campaign. Replacement switches are $700 just for the left block!
Is anyone aware if this switch recall applies to the 2014 GS Adv as well? My Left Rocker switch that runs you through the various display information has gotten pretty finicky.
If you follow the link below, there's list of all of the recalls for BMW bikes issued so far. I did look at it briefly and didn't see the '13/'14 switchgear recall but it may have not been an actual recall (like stanchions' issue), more of service bulletin... https://motorcycleviews.com/recalls/motorcyclerecallsforbmw.htm
I’m having the same issue. I found this bulletin online and am making a call in the morning: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2014/MC-10148457-9999.pdf Apparently, my 2016 VIN does not come up in the recall. I've got a call in to the guy who wrote the bulletin, and expect to catch up with him next week, as he's presently out of the office. I'll argue like crazy, as it's the same unit that's shown on the Tech Bulletin. Good luck! Allan
HI Khale do you have like a step by step procedure to remove and open the multifunction switch? my horn switch is not working
this post on adding cruise control a good start https://advrider.com/f/threads/removing-switchblocks-adding-cruise-control-2013-gs-lc.1488052/
after sitting in the rain for a week the left indicator on my hexhead isn't going gotta get round to pulling it apart to have a look at the contacts as i have motoscan, will first run that in live date to first confirm the switch is the problem
Finally was able to open the multifunction switch. Unfortunately the tape switch has to be replaced. I understand the whole switch has to be replaced
