Today when I was riding I noticed a 15KM/HR difference between the speed on the KTM versus that of my Garmin Zumo 660.
The bike speedometer was showing faster.
So which is the accurate one?

Has anyone had issues with proper speed display on the 1190?

    thanks

Everyone R and standard has app. 5% difference between indicated and "actual". I asked my dealer, he called his tech guy and was told it is what it is. Liability issues and such.

I'd go with the GPS. I have noticed a similar discrepancy between my 1190R and my Garmin 665.

Mine seems to be a bit more than 5%. Last nite was my first ride since I bought it and rode it home in April. IIRC 65 "indicated" was 60-ish on the GPS. And obviously the faster you go the worse the error. Very similar to my Jap bikes. I thnk the only moto I've ever had with an accurate speedo was my Softtail Custom, and I think my Speed Triple is pretty close. I don't understand the "liability" issue, but I've heard it for years. And now that I'm thinking about it, my 990 SMR is pretty close, the front tire circumference shows on the speedo and I've heard that it can be re-programmed - but the stock setting is about right for a "half worn" 120/70.

What I want to check today is how accurate the odometer is.

Can u set the tire size in the speedo to 19? This has worked on my 640 and 950. You should see a 21 come on when u turn on the ignition. The older speedos could be changed by owner. I dont know about the newer ones. U might have to have the dealer reset it.

I'm going to swing by Carolina KTM tomorrow while I'm out running around and have Scott enable my TPMS. I'll ask him about the speedo on the 1190. I know older KTMs the owner could change the settings for the front tire, and on my 990 SMR (2011) I believe the dealer can change it, but I have no idea on the 1190. I bought mine in April but had to leave it in NC when I flew back to FL. It's been frustrating not having the bike available to check things as I read these threads. The good part is now I'm back in. NC and have 9 days to ride and work my way home to FL :D

There's no dealer settings such as wheel diameter to play with. There is a different ECU firmware version for the R compared with the S and other differences depending on if the 'bike has MSC, EDS etc. Wheel diameter is hard coded into the firmware released by the factory. In Australia the MSC version(s) of the firmware were recalled in March because of a coding error that resulted in inaccurate speedo readings. Apparently this was quickly fixed by KTM in a new release of the MSC versions of the firmware that came out in April. It seems very likely that all 2014 'bikes hitting the distributors prior to March 2014 had this fault. A KTM dealer can check the firmware version numbers and make sure the latest version is loaded.

Got my % and mileage thinking reversed in the initial post. I meant 10% of indicated as stated later.

Someone posted somewhere....do not remember if it was a std or r.

They have a 2013 and updated the software to get the 2014 package.

Before update, the speedo was fine.

After update, speedo was 10% off.

Makes me think, what can be going on inside the program to throw off the speedo?

I have the same issue on my standard 1190. I asked the mechanic at SLM racing in Arlington, Tx and he said its a federal mandate that a "sport bike" speedo must be 5% high. It's hard for me to believe that.

I stopped in at Carolina KTM today and had Scott enable the TPMS, which was left off when I bought the bike in April. I have the latest US firmware, and 10% speedo error seems about right, compared to my GPS. I was in and out of the mountains all day (up and down, besides forward) so will get a better handle on the error when I get back to flat Florida. Also curious how accurate the odo is, since everyone's concerned about mpg and miles per tank.

The only options he had on his laptop were R, S and Superduke.

I think the DOT requirement is that errors have to be less than or equal to 10%. Mine is a tad under 10%, but not much. I think the error is by design to "help" us all keep these 150 HP monsters closer to the speed limits. :rofl Lots of luck with that one KTM. The odometers are much more accurate when compared to GPS distance measurements which are always a little less than actual distances (since they sum the straight line distances between sampled location coordinates).
