Picking up an 07 next weekend. I hear I need a gs911 but the price ranges vary widely. What does it do , and why do I need it ??and what’s the difference between the less than $100 vs $400 version ?
There's the enthusiast ver $400 for up to 10 bikes, the pro ver for unlmited bike / VINs for $700. Anything less would either be a discount for new ones. If substantially less? . a fire sell or a knock off, or used unit.. Basically a OBD reader.. allows to read / reset error codes.. reset service light interval and some advanced maintenance tasks..
Yeappers. Knock offs.. havent used them myself but if they work.. more power to ya.. At $75, i would definitely try one.. the GS-911 original much too expensive for a OBD reader.. considering you can get a good auto OBD for $50 and very nice ones for $75-100..
Have you considered the option to use Motoscan instead? A lot less expensive, works good for most and can be used on an unlimited number of bikes. https://www.motoscan.de/ I use it with the UniCarScan adapter which works perfect.
These Chinese knockoffs can be recognized based on the number of pins. All the pins are occupied, the original has less pins. They come with illegal outdated software. Heard from some guy’s they don’t work. Is you spent the $75 bucks on Motoscan you have a 100% working solution that might also work on your car or newer bikes.
If you visit their main site and go through FAQ, you should be able to find out everything you always wanted to know about GS911: https://www.hexcode.co.za/products/gs-911/support There's also a write-up on how to recognize counterfeit GS911s (those ~$100 ones): https://www.hexcode.co.za/products/gs-911/counterfeit?searchterm=counterf
I may have one of the originals which will work on your bike. I have used 3/10 vins. It looks like I have to update in order to communicate with the new r1200rs we picked up. Pm me if you're interested.
The Chinesium ones have no support and are not upgradeable. There was also talk that they contained a Trojan.
Just stick to popular brands like Netgear, Linksys, Asus, etc.. if you look hard enough I bet you will find many if not most made in China anyhow...heh..
Yes, but the the product production is strictly monitored by the parent company to exacting standards and quality control.
Yes in theory.. and for the most part.. in practice... but we all know how people "stick to exact standards and quality control" [emoji12] .. that goes for all hardware/ software in all companies / products.. anywhere...
Ironically.. i was actually responding to another thread about wirless routers.. LMAO.. but I guess it applies here too...heh heh.. my bad..
They have to stick to the ISO 9000 standard they claim. I worked for years with Industrial Process Control Equipment (Rockwell, GE, Modicon, Telemechanique etc.) made in America and Europe. When the manufacturers moved to China for the production there was no decline in quality or reliability. The production is very strictly monitored/controlled.
How many products/ manufacturing etc have been moved abroad / overseas and gone through a period of loss in quality and reliability... im sure they supposedly followed process and standards.. I get constant reminders with products like K&N filters, Stanley tools that have been shifted overseas only to come back and show sign of loss of quality, consistency, and reliability.. Not that I don't agree with you.. but standards and process, tests, validation.. can all be circumvented.. What a company supposed to do, processes that supposed to follow doesnt always happen.. hell, tons of companies here in the states have issues with quality, etc.. iso 9000 certification or not.. is'nt that the reasons we have recalls and service bulletins, etc?
I doubt that the GS911 clone mentioned above is a total fraud. It probably works , but maybe not with full functionality. The fact that the Hexcode site actually takes the trouble to mention the clones probably means that the clones do work. Also note that Hexcode doesn't say the clones don't work at all. The Hexcode write up is : "Counterfeit In the age where iPods and iPhone clones are as common as counterfeit auto parts, it comes as no surprise that there are counterfeit versions of GS-911! These products are offered for sale (mostly online) at a reduced cost. These products are most definitely counterfeit goods! Identifying counterfeit goods As of this writing, the current counterfeit devices can be identified as follows: Counterfeit GS-911 product may be identified by the following: Counterfeit product is shipped with a mini-CD. (we don't include CD's or mini-CD's - you download our software from http://www.hexcode.co.za/products/gs-911/downloads !) The round connector: is of extremely poor quality. has ALL pins populated. When powered up, the LED remains BLUE. No barcoded label on the box or GS-911 with the Serial number and production date. Shows incorrect User details when downloading software. Does not require you to Register your GS-911 unit - All NEW devices do!
I like to hear if anyone else has used the clone ones before.. any luck , any issues? Sure be nice to carry the cheap one on long trips and not worry about losing it versus carrying the real $400 one on trips :)
yeah , me too. Am waiting on my OBD LX / cable. With the motoscan app , hopefully can deal with issues whilst out touring
