Hi I am traveling over from Scotland to Boston late April to resume my USA tour on my own bike currently in storage. I will need tires within a few thousand miles so I have been checking places like Bikebandit and Revzilla but they all seem to be mainly out of stock. Is there a general shortage. Should I be worried? Its a 2009 BMW R1200GS. Thanks Steve
For some tires and sizes yes there is a shortage, there is also a fair amount of price increasing with those that are in stock.
You might get a better selection and price at the thevisorshop.com and having them shipped to your location in the US than you may find from the US retailers. Even with the DHL shipping from the UK to the US I’ve found them to be cheaper the last few times I’ve bought tires for my GS.
Like everything else, there is a squeeze. I had to order a tire for my car today. It'll be here Feb 2nd.
I went through the same things this fall, although not as nerve-wracking since I wasn't coming from a different country. The second thread below had several recommendations others wound up giving me. I wound up with Shinko 804/805s on my KTM 790R and TKC 70s on my 1250 GSA, both of which I have been happy with. https://advrider.com/f/threads/is-there-a-tire-shortage.1520614/#post-43036617 https://advrider.com/f/threads/current-w-covid-shortages-‘21-gsa-tire-recommendations.1514918/
American MotoTire.com. Easy peasy. Decent pricing, fast, free shipping. And no I do not work there, own the place, or have any interest therein whatsoever.
