Hello, I'm looking to either re-valve and re-spring the stock shock on my 2010 Enduro R or replace it with on Ohlins. The cost for the Ohlins will be double what I would have to pay for the work on the stock unit. What more would I be getting for the additional cost with the Ohlins? My goal is to eliminate the harshness of the stock shock and suit it to my weight which is 180 lbs without riding gear or soft luggage and camping gear (additional 30 pounds?). For the record, I'm a intermediate rider (although just barely, maybe I'm at the top end of the beginner bracket). The bike is used for long distance riding, mostly on gravel fire roads, whooped out quad trails and the occasional single track. Thanks for your help!!
For one, when you sell the bike, you'd be getting at least half of your money back by taking it off and selling off the bike, so it's really about the same costs. Im surprised you find the rear harsh actually. They are very unders prung, you may want to try a slightly stiffer spring...the fronts are what's harsh, and over sprung.
Get a revalve the 690 shock has way to much hi speed damping , you can get them a lot better but with the shorter stroke it makes it hard to get them really plush especially with the 250mm travel bikes , but if your tall enough you can get up to 285mm travel easy enough
I've been investigating the same thing. According to my suspension guy, the Ohlins can be altered to provide 300mm of travel. I'm leaning that way, because of cost mostly.
I'm probably circa 180lbs in riding gear and had to do quite a bit to my 2009 R model to get it in the right ballpark. On the rear I put on an 85 Nm spring from an SMC (KTM OEM Part) which definitely helped get the geometry in the right region and get a bit more weight over the front. I adjusted the compression and rebound settings through trial and error and didn't feel the damping on the rear was that bad (especially when compared to the front!) but I probably don't really push it that hard. As a bit of an experiment, I'm currently having a spare shock re-valved to work with some modified CC forks so when I get them back, I'll do a comparison and report back. I personally think the standard shock is of fairly good quality and can be made to work well by someone who knows what they're doing (definitely not me!). For reference, I also ended up using 4.8Nm fork springs to get me in the right sag range but I'm still experimenting with the damping If your searching for increased travel, the Ohlins/RR is the obvious way to go but as I'm happy with the 275mm of travel (and limited by inseam and skill level), I though the cost of a service/re-valve was worth a punt. However, as WSMC said, although it will increase my enjoyment it won't add to the future value of the bike like an aftermarket solution; bling always goes down well
I'm using a Rally Raid rallye shock but with only a 80nm spring, it's super plush now and at last the bike handles the way I'd like so instead of bouncing of rocks it just floats over them
Hi Timo, VERY nice bike! Is this the 300mm shock with PDS? How have you found it and what have you found to be the biggest differences compared to the stock shock? Did you modify the fork spring/travel to match? Many thanks Q
Hi, the forks were already sorted with the conversion from RR and revalved when I acquired the bike. But I've found it steers and handles best with the forks 14mm up the yokes. Biggest difference is as I said, it's plush, doesn't bounce off rocks and can really feel the excellent damping doing it's job. The bike's transformed for me.
Reading about suspension and stumbled across this thread. I recently acquired a 2009 690R and I don't think the RR 300mm Tractive shock is going to work for me (seat height too high). I have the Ohlins to replace it with so if somebody wants to make an offer.?.?.? Less than 200 miles on shock
This Tractive shock is off the bike I just sold. It is the top of the line Rally shock from Rally Raid and cost me $1800 bucks including shipping. It is a fantastic shock and is basically brand new. Someone can get a very very good deal!
Thanks for the plug. I hate to get rid of it after what you told me about it but I just can't do the height. I'd love to trade for a 250mm Tractive...that's probably not going to come around though
I did the respring and revalve (front and rear) and its great. Took a while to dial in though. I am *way* faster on the backroads because the bike it sooo planted now. In hind sight - if I could have bought the Ohlins and had the same level of success - I would have. Like wsmc831 says, you can always put the stock shock back on and move the ohlins to a new bike or sold separately.
I recently bought the 275mm travel Tractive Overland shock from RR, only has rebound damping but does have the hydraulic preload and ride height adjusters. I have a 90nm spring which is the softest that Tractive offer and it's still a bit hard, static sag is only 10-15mm even with zero preload and it was only on a recent off road trip through Portugal carrying 20-25kg of luggage that I needed to increase the preload. I'm current using re-valved and re-sprung EXC forks. I hope to soon try an 85nm spring as it's a bit harsh at present, reminds me of my old 950SE where the suspension, for me anyway, only seemed to work either at higher speeds or when carrying luggage.
