I thought I'd put a plug in for a cool place I stayed this weekend. It's about 20 minutes west of Mount Airy NC located on 450 acres that used to be a camp for juvenile delinquents many years ago. It's up a gravel road and gravel runs through the property to explore the grounds. You can rent a small one room cabin, premium tent site ($30), or pitch a tent anywhere on the 450 acres ($18). Some of the old camp structure still remain so you can even pitch your tent under a covered structure if that's your thing. They have a community fire pit, large clean bath house, laundry, and a well stocked kitchen at your disposal.
I have no affiliation with the camp with the exception of car camping there this past weekend. The place is perfect for a moto camper on the move that needs facilities. It's reasonably priced and it's close to the parkway. 091221_6.jpg

This is one of the premium tent sites.

Not a bad place to cook if it's raining

One hazard I'd mention is that along the gravel road up the mountain I passed 2 untethered dogs that chased my car. Just be ready if you decide to visit.

    That's my assumption.

One of the owners was a counselor at the boys camp back in 2004. The place sat for 5 years uninhabited during that time. The current owners are making incremental improvements.
This weekend I fell to sleep to the sound of Coyotes howling at night and woke to the sound of a whip poor will perched on a limb above my tent. We were the only campers there this weekend.

I mentioned to the owner last weekend that I was planning to drop a link to their place on this site. She asked me if choppers could make it up the mountain. I told her that most that frequent this site tour on a different style motorcycle.

That’s a great area. If you’re riding checkout Lambsburg and take 620 up to the Blue Ridge or beyond and towards Galax.
