I bought a 83 Virago 500 from an inmate in NH. Went to do the VT registration thing (missing some documentation to do it in NY). I submitted my paperwork and they returned it but didn’t give me back the old NH registration I had – or I lost that since they returned the paperwork which is possible. Everything looked good except they require VIN verification.

From their paperwork: VIN verifications completed out-of-state are to be examined by motor vehicle officials or state-level law enforcement officials, or by personnel authorized by that state to perform VIN verifications.

I assume that would mean NY State Patrol but who else could do it? And would the SP have any issues or give me any hassle? Anybody with any experience doing this? Also, I am near Watkins Glen so a resource near here would be preferred.

    TIA

Here it can be verified by any local PD. They check the VIN and sign the form

I've had to do that twice for different reasons. Once locally (NH), and once out of state (FL). Neither was a problem. Could be your local DMV, or the nearest State PD. If you already have the form, simplest thing is to try calling the local DMV

I found this: VIN verifications are currently waived except for salvage vehicles, foreign titles, or vehicles requiring temporary registration..

I assume "foreign" is out of state.

Any police officer can do it. Stop by the station with it on a trailer or wherever cops hang out. Be nice, bring donuts...

I brought in an out-of-state (PA) used bike this past summer (2020) & had the VIN check completed by the local police dept. Basically he looked it over, compared paperwork to the ID plate & also called in the VIN while he was there to check the stolen vehicle database.

Many years back I registered an out-of-state family car (which was still out of state) & had the VIN verification form filled out by the state police (SC in that case)

No issues with VT DMV accepting the form in either case

Last Summer when I registered a used Vstrom bought in NY I called VT DMV about this and they waived Vin verification due to COVID.

Just wanted to provide an update (and have a question). Trailered it to the local state police barracks and got a young trooper to do the VIN verification. He ran the VIN as well which was clean - as anticipated. Submitted all the paperwork to VT again. Few weeks later got the plate in the mail (this week). However, there is no year sticker and the only paperwork I got back was a copy of the application. Is that normal or maybe there is more coming later?

Hang tight, that is how it is done here.

You will get an actual registration along with the sticker in a week or two.
