The three biggest problems holding back electric motorcycles in 2024 are the same three big problems that held them back in 2014: Lack of range, high MSRP and lack of EV charging stations. But Zero is now doing something big about that third problem, offering the new Tesla Tap Mini accessory. This opens up much of Tesla’s charging network to Zero’s motorcycles.

There’s nothing mind-blowing here, just an adapter that allows Zero owners to use Level 2 Destination Tesla chargers (but not Superchargers). It will also work with Tesla wall chargers.

Zero says this opens up 40,000 new charging points for their motorcycles, and Brian Wismann Zero’s Senior VP of Product Development, says this is a big deal for his company and battery bikes in general:

We’re excited about what the Tesla Tap Mini means not only to the Zero Motorcycles community, but also for the continued progress of EV motorcycles within the broader market. This adapter unlocks tens of thousands of new charging opportunities for electric motorcycle riders and provides our customers with an added peace of mind to be able to rely on charging infrastructure when it’s needed on their electric adventures.

Of course, this does little to solve the problem with EV bikes from an ADV perspective: There are very few chargers in the middle of nowhere, especially once you leave the power grid behind. While you can travel through remote regions on an electric motorcycle (Sinje Gottwald rode a Cake Kalk across Africa in 2023), such feats are not the norm, and not possible without concessions to the limitations of battery bikes. The Tesla Tap Mini is also supposed to work with other non-Tesla chargers. As per their marketing spiel on the website, you get these benefits:

• Wide Range Charging: Capable of charging from any stationary or portable EVSE ranging from 110V to 250V with a NACS charging pistol, providing flexibility for riders on the go.

• US-Built EV Friendly: Designed to be compatible with any US electric vehicle and charges at up to 60 AMPS @ 250VAC (15 kW), making it a versatile addition to any electric vehicle enthusiast’s toolkit.

• Peace of Mind: Features two padlock slots for securing the adapter to your Tesla connector and your Zero Motorcycle, ensuring your charging setup is both safe and secure.
