Here’s some bad news for all you trusting Inmates out there – there are evil people in the world. And while I have always maintained that the populations of far-flung Third World countries are essentially honest, I can’t necessarily say the same when you’re closer to home. It makes sense: a BMW 6.5” TFT Display won’t be much use to a petty thief in Allahabad while it poses little difficulty to turn it into cash in Berlin, Melbourne or Cincinnati.
Unfortunately, BMW MOTORRAD has so far not picked up on the fact that these displays on R1250 and R1300 GSs are only clipped on and secured with three delicate circlips. “As a result,” according to German BMW accessory manufacturer Wunderlich, “reports of stolen TFT displays are becoming more common among BMW GS owners, often accompanied by reports of collateral damage to the bike. Thieves aren’t gentle, making this even more frustrating: without a TFT display, continuing your journey isn’t possible.” And that is a pain even when you’re close to home.
Replacing the TFT unit, which holds a complex central control unit, is also both difficult and very expensive. Wunderlich has long offered TFT theft protection for the 1250 GS and GS Adventure and has now developed a version suitable for the R1300 GS.
