Iggs is trying to print to A5 paper (not the more common A4). For A5, I can print no problem to PDF if I select A5 paper size and reduce to 75% in my print dialog. Hopefully this info helps someone else. But remember, you don't have to use PDF at all to use RN. You can print direct to A4 or US Letter paper. It sucks that Windows doesn't have PDF software built-in. Dave
Dave/Mike - Has anyone gotten RN to work on a Linux (Ubuntu specifically) machine? Google Earth plugin does not seem to be supported, so it looks like no chance. Figured I'd ask.
Had a brief look. It appears RN scales the page correctly (ie even number of route instructions per page) in A4, but as soon as you select A5 or A3, regardless of PDF writer, it keeps the same scaling and spreads it over 2 pages (in the case of A5, and leaves heaps of white space in A3). One workaround to get the A5 you are after: Print to PDF as A4. Open the A4 PDF (in adobe reader or whatever PDF reader you are using) Then print this document to A5. This will rescale your A4 document to A5, keeping the same proportions (ie number of route instructions per page). Just tested this with Chrome, print to A4 with PDFcreator, opened PDF in NitroPDF, then printed to A5 with PDFCreator. Clear as mud?
Page layout doesnt work properly in Firefox when printing to A4 so I just went to Chrome and its a pain because I dont have the google earth plugin set up. Interestingly there is a note that comes up in Chrome that RN works best in Firefox Well not for me it doesnt still :huh Because the roadbook to print comes up with a seperate window with no menu I dont seem to be able to access any options to do with margins etc. I can access those when I go to print in a normal window aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh this is doing my head in
OK, I just want to make sure I'm not trying to do something stupid due to my complete lack of experience here What I'm expecting to be able to do is print off the roadbook onto a series of A5 sheets which I will then trim for length and stick together and roll so I can put them into a roadbook holder. I havent used a roadbook holder yet but I have seen and held one So I'm 'assuming' that A5 is the correct width (14.8 cm) for a conventional roadbook holder as used in FIM rallies. This is based on the scanning I did of the ADDC roadbooks the other night but there were in books as they came from a car driving friend Assuming can of course make an ASS out of U and ME so just checking The reason for all this palava is I'm trying to get to grips with reading a roadbook while riding prior to the ADDC at the end of march.
Iggs, I am using Chrome in Windows and CutePDF. I can print WIDE ROLL on A5 and it works correctly. When I try Print Wide Page on A5 it thinks there is one extra data row and pukes that on to it's own page. That then repeats, for every full page I get one with only one routing/call/direction on it, then a full page, then one line, repeat.... Maybe that helps? I only print A5 to PDF to load into RallyBlitz Roadbook app on an Ipad Mini so the A5 size fits very well in there. I have tried custom paper sizes to get rid of the gaps between the top/bottom of the virtual pages but no success there so far but not a deal breaker for me. Hope this helps you a bit. I run it in Chrome as I have had a hard time with Firefox dragging really slow when downloading the route and then about half the time the GE plugin doesn't initialize. (yes it is optimized and this is the most current version of FF on Windows 7 Professional which is also up to date) I haven't had many/any issues with Chrome and Rally Navigator on a couple of different machines. Yes, A5 is the correct width to work in a conventional Roadbook.
OK this is exactly the same problem I'm having. Well at least its not just me experiencing the glitch and I'm not going completely mad!! I've found how to adjust the page margins in Firefox. You need to go via the firefox menu and click the print icon there. It opens a completely seperate dialog page where you can adjust page set up etc I've been messing with the top and bottom margins and if I have those set to 0 it will print all 7 rows of the roadbook allocated by page!! At last But and there is a but Does this mean that I wont be able to actually print the pages out correctly as my understanding is most printers require some top and bottom margin to allow them to pick up the paper. hmmmmmmmm
Just looked back through the thread and realised I had got the questions confused If your printing out on paper to run in a roadbook, then the A4 standard print will be the correct width once you cut the white space off the right hand side of the page. The actual print width is about 130mm which will fit in most roadbooks. (A4 page is 210mm wide) If your viewing roadbook on an ipad then an A5 PDF would be better as the route instructions would fill the screen when zoomed to fit screen. The method I described before (Print to A4 PDF, then open PDF and print again to A5) wouldn't work as you would still end up with a heap of white space down the RHS of the page.
Here is a link to my pdf printed roadbook I've been battling with https://www.dropbox.com/s/xczrrqn1mlynk95/2014 01 Roadbook Yard to Lahbab.pdf?dl=0 I've ordered some A5 paper and so will try printing it off next week. Will try and get a roadbook off james too
Iggs, thanks again for sharing how you use RN. We can't imagine every scenario, so user feedback is very helpful! Folks, our direct-to-pdf feature is coming soon. And we will add A5 paper support now that we understand people are using it. If there are other features that you'd like to see in the new direct-to-pdf feature, fire away. This new feature will completely replace printing from the browser and will add more control. Dave & Mike
A colored row or cell option for some entries like !!! or Fuel would be nice, especially for "beginner" rallies. The ability for the roadbook maker to highlight something important even if the rider doesn't wouldn't hurt and might help. I'd hate to have one of my friends eat it into a hazard because they lacked the experience to highlight a danger themselves. I'd like to be able to use my experience to A) help keep them reasonably safe, and B) prevent me (the route organizers) having to perform a field recovery of a rider/their bike because they lacked the experience to highlight something important. If it's not possible this time, perhaps on a long term wish list of options? I love this product and the Dakar has given me rally fever. I've been scouting a new route in GE while I should be working
Printed out my first road book!! It's A5 paper on a Xerox 3320PS from Adobe reader. The print dialogue said it was at 94% scaling on the fit setting I've now got a road book holder at home so will stick it together and load it in later Nav tower is on its way apparently Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
